This homemade Apple Cider is wonderfully cozy and fills your house with an incredible aroma. You can make this on the stovetop or in a slow cooker for a hands-off approach. This recipe yields about 8–10 servings and is much better than store-bought because you can control the sweetness.
Ingredients
-
10–12 large apples (use a mix like Gala, Fuji, and Granny Smith for balance)
-
¾ cup brown sugar (adjust to taste)
-
4–5 cinnamon sticks
-
1 tablespoon whole cloves
-
1 whole nutmeg (or 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg)
-
1 tablespoon allspice berries (optional)
-
1 orange, quartered
-
Water (enough to cover the fruit)
Instructions
1. Prep the Fruit
Wash your apples and cut them into quarters. There is no need to peel or core them—the skins and seeds add flavor and pectin. Place them in a large stockpot or slow cooker. Add the orange quarters.
2. Add Spices & Water
Add the cinnamon sticks, cloves, nutmeg, allspice, and brown sugar. Pour in enough water to cover the fruit by at least 2 inches.
3. Simmer
-
Stovetop: Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low. Cover and simmer for 3 hours.
-
Slow Cooker: Cook on low for 8–10 hours or on high for 4–5 hours.
4. Mash the Apples
Once the apples are very soft, use a potato masher or a large spoon to mash the fruit directly in the pot. This releases all the remaining juices and flavor. Let it simmer uncovered for another 30 minutes.
5. Strain
Place a fine-mesh strainer (lined with cheesecloth if you want it very clear) over a large bowl or pitcher. Carefully pour the mixture through. Discard the solids.
6. Serve
Serve warm in mugs. Garnish with a fresh cinnamon stick or a thin slice of apple.
Pro Tips
-
For a "Spiked" Version: Add a splash of bourbon, dark rum, or brandy to individual mugs before serving.
-
Tartness: If it’s too sweet, add a squeeze of fresh lemon juice at the end to brighten the flavor.
